CYJP Third Annual Memorial Day Ceremony

THE THIRD ANNUAL COUNCIL OF YOUNG JEWISH PRESIDENTS MEMORIAL DAY CEREMONY IS SET TO TAKE PLACE ON MONDAY, MAY 31ST AT 7:30PM AT CONGREGATION KEHILLAT JESHURUN, LOCATED AT 125 E85TH STREET. THIS CEREMONY, AIMED AT HONORING THOSE WHO HAVE GIVEN THEIR LIVES IN DEFENSE OF OUR COUNTRY, WILL FEATURE MEDAL OF HONOR RECIPIENT COL JACK JACOBS AS THE KEYNOTE, A CANDLE LIGHTING CEREMONY WITH FAMILY MEMBERS OF MEN AND WOMEN WHO WERE KILLED IN ACTION, A CHOIR PERFORMANCE AND A POST-CEREMONY ACTION CENTER WHERE GUESTS ARE INVITED TO WRITE LETTER AND SEND PACKAGES TO SERVICE MEMBERS ABROAD. IN ITS FIRST YEAR, THE EVENT ATTRACTED 250 PEOPLE AND LAST YEAR THE EVENT DREW A CROWD OF 400.
CYJP's first-ever Mitzvah Day was a tremendous success!  We had 65 people join thousands of other volunteers world-wide, from London to Prague to Jerusalem, in a global day of social action and tikkun olam.  We kicked off the day with brunch at the Manhattan JCC, during which Dani Passow from Uri L'Tzedek shared some inspiring thoughts about the Jewish values of social action.  Our volunteers then departed for their various service projects: cooking meals for a homeless shelter; cleaning and gardening in a NYC park; painting and beautifying a halfway house; sorting clothes at a clothing pantry; visiting with and brightening the day for senior citizens; and participating in bone marrow registry and blood drives.  View pictures from the day below, and start thinking about Mitzvah Day 2010!
